Some individuals argue that the government should prevent media from putting sensational details, since it can detrimenetally influence people. Personally, I believe it is vital that the actual information remains letting people make their own assumptions.
On the one hand, detailed reportages about crimes undoubtedly has a huge impact on people’s mental health. Excessive consumption of such information might lead to deteriorative consequences. For instance, an individual interested in watching true crime videos on streaming apps is prone to experiencing acute anxiety. As a result of watching such content hours on end they might see criminals in anyone. Similarly, person subscribed to news channels on a number of platforms might lose a sense of safety even at home. Such people are unable to relax after an exhausting routine, because of the feeling, that they are surrounded by maniacs.
On the other hand, media is providing people with an information about the world the way it is, without which it might be impossible to understand the reality. Firstly, journalists are warning people letting them make proper decisions while the law abiding person is not found. Sometimes it takes insurmountable efforts to find the one responsible for the crime. For example, a well-known Zodiac was never revealed to the public. Therefore, detailed descriptions of their doings can prevent people from taking it unseriously and continue trusting people they are unfamiliar with. For example, just 30 years ago autostopping was common, however nowadays people understand how dangerous it can be.
To sum up, newspapers and TV shows are helping people realise the threat they face, letting them make adequate decisions, although excessive access to such information might have deteriorative impact. I believe it is vital that people should find proper balance between being aware of real crimes and consuming such news too often.
