In many parts of the world today, it is widely thought that providing specific information about crimes in newspapers and on television can have negative outcomes, so data of this kind in the media should be limited. From my point of view, I’m afraid I have to disagree with this statement.
There are many reasons why giving detailed descriptions of crimes in the media should be the top priority. First and foremost, it is believed that this practice helps citizens have better protection for themselves when going outside such as preparing defense items because they are aware of the danger of their surroundings. Therefore, undesired situations like violent attacks or robbing can be confined significantly. Secondly, it is accepted that posting specific information about crimes in the media makes the police seek more easily. This, in turn, could restrict robbing or violent attacks as much as possible. For instance, if someone accidentally saw a robber whom they had seen on TV on the road, they could contact the police in order to catch that robber.
On the other hand, the advocates of this idea argue that confining precise depictions of crimes in the newspapers or TV brings many negative consequences. Firstly, it is more likely that limiting information of this kind can lead to an increase in crimes due to the fact that when they are not criticized and punished, they would not be aware of that action which is very wrong and unaccepted. Moreover, it is supposed that this practice can make individuals not have a careful defense for themselves, leading to certain undesired circumstances that seriously affect their mental and physical health.
To restate my stand, although restricting that information may have some benefits, I would argue that providing detailed depictions of crimes in the media should be prioritized.
