It is argued that the massive trend of globalization has brought humanity a loss of cultural identity. I completely agree with this statement because it causes cultural homogenization and destroys local languages.
First of all, globalization spreads a single, dominant culture across the world, making different countries look and feel exactly the same. With the global exchange of information, people are increasingly adapting similar lifestyles so that individuals are abandoning their traditional clothing, local foods, and unique architectural styles because of global trends. For example, multinational corporations like McDonald’s, Starbucks, and Nike are present in almost every major city on Earth. This means that people with different cultural backgrounds all follow the same trends, therefore unique local traditions are becoming less common.
Furthermore, globalization poses a massive threat to linguistic diversity. Many local languages are becoming extinct since they are being replaced in favor of globalization. Subsequently, the unique worldview, oral history, and cultural wisdom attached to the language might disappear forever. To illustrate, English has become the dominant global language for business, science, and the internet. Because of this, many parents encourage their children to speak English instead of their native dialects to secure better career opportunities. If current trends continue, hundreds of minority languages may go extinct within a few generations, representing a permanent loss of human heritage.
In conclusion, I completely agree that globalization leads to a loss of cultural identity. The widespread presence of global corporations and the rapid disappearance of local languages are erasing the diversity that makes our world special.
