Band 5+: Government should impose a tax on sugary drinks and fast food. Do you agree or disagree with this statement?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

Food consumption in modern days have been industrialized with the help of technological advancement. It provided leisure to over consume foods and certain ingredients, some of these ingredients can have a negative impact on buyers health. In the following essay, I will mention reasons on why I am vouching for taxation.

Combining finacial reperation as a way to prevent harms that comes with unhealthy habits is only logical on the short term. Faster results will be achieved as people would rather save money than losing it. we can see the taxation on cars for example, where people used to buy a new car every 3-5 years, but with taxation they no longer did. Which is good for both the environment and their savings. The same goes for taxing on foods as people defered to healthier choices therefore reducing the burden on health institutions and increasing productivity.

On the other hand, relaying only on financial burdening can fail its purpose on the long run. People will get used to paying without for a legeslation they do not comprehend. As an example, the same happend before smoke taxing, where sales have dropped then started spiking upwards after a while. Elevating peoples knowledge and letting them decide for themselves is better for some, although others might still ignore all warning signs.

In conclusion, taxing is not a silver bullet, nonetheless, its a powerful insturment that can be used to deter individual choices. A combination of both taxing and education is better on both short and long terms.
