Safety in sports has always been a concerning issue in today’s world, which has ignited a heated discourse there is a suggestion about a ban on dangerous sports, and some people endorse that people should be free to choose their physical activities. In this essay, I aim to elaborate on both sides in depth before voicing my stance that freedom in sports choice is of importance.
Proponents of banning dangerous sports often emphasize the elevated risk of injury and fatalities associated with such activities. Engaging in hazardous sports often increases the likelihood of injury, or, more seriously, leads to death. This was exemplified by the case of mountain climbing where reports of casualties of mountain climbers are not uncommon. Hence, governments should impose a ban on those sports to prevent people from encountering such hazardous activities. However, the reasons for those events are often due to poor-quality equipment and a shortage of training. Rather than imposing a ban, authorities should focus on educating participants, ensuring they possess the necessary skills to handle dangerous situations by, for instance, implementing safety programs.
Despite the aforementioned arguments, I wholeheartedly agree that no limitation should deter people from participating in perilous physical activities due to the benefits they offer in various aspects. From a health-related perspective, these activities can vastly enhance individuals’ physical and mental well-being since they require sufficient health, both physically and mentally, of those participating in them. To illustrate, some sports like mountaineering or parachuting fundamentally entail mental resilience and physical strength, which is extremely necessary to reduce the risk of injury. Another significant feature is that those sports can foster a sense of achievement. For example, when a footballer scores a goal in a match or the case of mountaineering when people reach the summit after suffering a fatigue of climbing. As a result, these feelings of contentment can
gradually set goals for those players to strive for, particularly for those who are feeling uninspired and losing direction in their daily lives. Moreover, these sports can exert positive impacts on individuals’ habits. Through the frequent plan-making and preparation in these activities, which increases safety when engaging in them, people may gradually develop a habit of planning meticulously before doing any important things in their lives, not only sports. Thus, those benefits can justify the role of adventurous sports in our lives, pointing out that such a ban is unnecessary
To sum up, while the reason for a ban on these sports is valid, eliminating them entirely is not a solution. I personally presume that provided that precautions of safety are adhered to, injuries are avoidable. Meanwhile, the enormous advantages adventurous sports provide, namely the improvement in mental and physical health and fostering a sense of accomplishment, motivating individuals to endeavor more may eclipse drawbacks.
