There is ongoing debate about whether the responsibility for supporting older people should lie with the government or whether pensioners should be self-reliant. While some argue that authorities should provide financial and social support through programs like Social Security, others believe individuals should plan ahead for their retirement and avoid depending on state assistance. In my opinion, while government initiatives play a crucial role, individuals must also take responsibility for securing their future.
On the one hand, governments should not overlook their older generations and should implement laws to protect their interests. This is because in the past, not many people planned for the future or saved much money, and they trusted their government which deducted from their salary for retirement. As a result, there are now lots of pensioner people to feed so some governments are struggling. However, countries like the USA have created projects called Social Security to look after at older population. For example, they provide financial support based on an individual’s lifetime earnings. Also, they check on them weekly, which is particularly beneficial for individuals who have no one. If every government implements this type of project, our older people may live longer and in adequate conditions.
On the one hand, we should not totally make government responsible for taking care of older people. This is because governments these days are facing funding shortfalls that make financial support difficult. This issue can be attributed to the increasing financial burden on government-funded programs like Social Security due to rising interest rates. As a result, many individuals, who are about to retire, do not believe in the government’s support and taking action immediately. For example, in the USA people who are aged between 40-50 are seeing that some retirees are not decently funded by the government due to lack of funds so they are starting to think of their own future and some research has shown that those people are declining governments’ support.
Moreover, in today’s society, the focus has shifted towards wealth and influence, making the concept of caring less prevalent. This is because in social media many content creators are showing off their wealth and luxurious lifestyles, as a result, many people are trying harder to achieve their goals and to be successful. In fact, the young generation wants to be more financially independent compared to the old one because in the past not many people were interested in being self-employed so they worked at factories for very low wages but currently people are depending on themselves and creating many businesses to be self-employed. In other words, people are becoming more self-reliant and striving to achieve the lifestyles they have always dreamed of.
In conclusion, while governments should offer financial and moral support to those in need, individuals cannot rely entirely on state assistance due to funding limitations. As self-reliance becomes more common, people are proactively securing their financial future rather than depending on government programs. Therefore, a balanced approach, where both the government and individuals share responsibility, is the most sustainable solution.
