Nowadays, a significant part of the government’s budget is spent on gentrification in many cities. However, some people think that the same amount of money can be utilized for other infrastructure projects such as new houses and roads. I disagree with this opinion because gentrification helps to save the historical uniqueness of a region and country. Also, the modernization of old buildings is a way to increase the tourism level in the city, which will make it possible to find revenue in other projects.
The first reason why the government should invest money in restoration is that old buildings are the main part of cultural heritage of a certain region and many of them are in poor condition. If the government invests an enormous amount of money in renovations, historic buildings will be restored to their original appearance, which will reflect the historical features of the era. For example, Flatiron Building in Poland was damaged after the second World War, and the governments decided to reconstruct it. The restoration allowed to preserve the structural features of the 19th century and the cultural heritage of Poland.
On the other hand, maintaining buildings of historical value in good condition is a way to attract many tourists in a region. Tourism creates new employment places and improves the country’s economy. As a result, a part of revenue can be spent on new infrastructure projects such as new housing and road improvement. For instance, in some historical cities in Russia, a large amount of money was invested in the restoration of old buildings and temples, which the cities are famous for. The renewal of the cultural heritage attracted more tourists, which allowed the government to invest revenue in improving the urbanization of the cities.
In conclusion, preserving old buildings should be a priority for governments because they are an important part of country history. Also, their renovation enhances the economy of a city and makes it possible to use revenue in other urban projects.
