Preserving historical buildings is crucial for maintaining cultural heritage, identity, and sustainability. While some people are of the opinion that preserving historical sites is important, others, on the other hand, think that the government should spend money on modern developments. From my own perspective, I totally agree with the former view due to some major reasons that are explained in this essay.
Firstly, preserving historical buildings is to protect the cultural heritage and the identity of a city. As the old buildings are closely connected with the history of a city, they tell its development, the culture and its residents. Protecting these structures maintains the identity and the character of the city, offering future generations a connection to their history. For example, Vietnam has many historical sites which tell of the national resistance war against the powerful country. If these structures are demolished due to modern development, the future generations will not have a clue about its own history, they will not develop a sense of solidarity as well as gratitude.
Secondly, those historical structures are one of the most tourist attractions. Every year, thousands of people come to visit the historical sites of a nation, as a result it brings wealth for the locals and pushes economic developments. Evidently in Paris, Tokyo, these are of those historical cities and have capitalized on their historical structures, which draws millions of visitors every year.
Moreover, restoration and adaptive use of the historical architecture can be more environmentally sustainable than demolition and new construction. As they preserve these structures diminishes the waste associated with the demolition and the environmental impact of producing new buildings.
In conclusion, it is very essential to preserve historical buildings, as it is to maintain the cultural heritage and identity, push the development of the economy and bring environmental benefits.
