Band 7+: How do you feel about the recent same-sex marriage hearing in Nepal?

I have been having discussions about this with other members of the community. You might across many Nepalis claiming that this is not a same-sex marriage because it is a cis man and a trans woman getting married. While others claim that this is a same-sex marriage because both of their citizenship certificates have an ‘M’ under sex. Even if it is a cis man and a trans woman getting married, it is a huge deal because no marriage between a cis man and a trans woman has been officially recorded in Nepal before. There is also an aspect of power dynamics at play here with one partner being significantly older especially at the time of their marriage back in 2016 which makes me a bit wary of celebrating this marriage. The debate can’t be solved by claiming that this is a cis man and a trans woman getting married because Maya, the more femme of the two, hasn’t exclusively identified herself as a trans woman and sees herself as ‘Third Gender’ (which is not exactly the ‘Hijra’ identity but an identity cultivated in the 90s and 00s and is now how a lot of non-cisgender queer folks, especially older queer folks in Nepal identify regardless of their sexual characteristics and AGAB). How someone who is ‘third gender’ should identify their sex label on their citizenship is a matter of personal choice and convenience. So, claiming this is not a same-sex marriage is generalizing the debate and claiming this is a same-sex marriage is not pushing back against the structures that make changing the sex label inaccessible and pushing heteronormative ideals for honestly pinkwashing.
