Some individuals work in a more rigorous way for longer hours both in academia and business. This observation can be attributed to different underlying factors, ranging from financial motivations to personality traits. Although it can bring about positive outcomes, potential dangers should not be overlooked.
Dedicatingmore time and energy on one’s mission, in a professional career or in education, can stem from financial incentives or a hunt for a sense of fulfilment. Some people yearn for an extravagant lifestyle, including high-end attire and food, spacious houses, premium vehicles, luxury vacations, and elegance in general. Translating into working harder, this desire usually makes them devote themselves more than others to their professions. However, this is not the whole story. Some people pursue a sense of satisfaction that results from personal achievements. In academia, a substantial number of researchers work for long hours, sometimes in less ideal working conditions, hoping to finally become entitled to present their works at prestigious international scientific conferences. After interviewing some of them, I have gathered that in addition to a sense of purpose, some try hard to reach outcomes in which they can take pride, usually by gaining international awards and scientific prizes.
This phenomenon can be positive to some extent, but if work and study turn into obsession it can seriously put long-term well-being in danger. Many hard-working members of society and people who are serious about their studies suffer from sleep deprivation. Additionally, they often cannot manage to prepare food for themselves, feeding on nutritionally lower-value ready meals. Combined with chronic stress, these factors can seriously compromise their health in the long run. By spending enough time to tackle these problems and fitting a physical activity session into their routine, they can enjoy success in their careers while avoiding the unwanted side-effects of putting too much pressure on themselves.
In conclusion, some people tend to put themselves under strain in their professions and studies for financial ambitions and personal characteristics. While this may put their health in danger, by striking a balance they can enjoy their success in a healthy condition.
