There are different perspectives about using of video cameras in public places in terms of reducing criminal activities. Some people assume that this measures control individual’s privacy, and others believe that this way can provide safe environment for people. Although video cameras have themselves merits, the downsides should be taken into account.
On the one hand, nowadays criminal activities are rising significantly, especially in crowded areas, such as restaurants, markets, and tourist centers. By establishing cameras in these places, it might be convenient to identify people who failed to adhere the law or participate in crime. Moreover, using cameras in buildings provide a safe environment for residents whose may worry about thief or kidnapping. In addition, some places that are tourist attractions, it is compulsory to monitor tourists’ behavior in order to avoid terrorist activities. As a result, having cameras in public areas offer safe environments for people.
On the other hand, proponents of the idea that these cameras restrict individual’s freedom believe that people spend their considerable time in outside, they use their cellphones to chat, explore the net, or make a conservation. Therefore, by monitoring residents, governments might inform about their privacy. They advocate that instead of using cameras, police officer should take an action in public places to control criminal activities which promote safety and respect individual’s privacy. Consequently, other aspects should be taken into consideration to make both safe places and individual freedom.
In conclusion, even though controlling crimes is a standout issue for every society, having respect to privacy is a crucial aspect for people. In my opinion, it is better to use video cameras in places which is face over crowded such as city centers to identify criminal activities.
