Positive And Negative

Band 6+: In many countries around the world, rural people are moving to cities, so the population in the countryside is decreasing. Do you think this is a positive or a negative development?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

In a substantial number of countries, rural individuals are migrating to cities, leading to a decline in the rural population. In my view, this trend has both positive and negative implications.

To commence, the primary reason for this phenomenon is the availability of significant job opportunities in urban areas. Numerous companies have established their headquarters in cities, dramatically increasing job prospects. In India, for instance, the younger generation relocates to urban areas such as Chennai, Mumbai, and Bangalore, where job opportunities are abundant compared to rural regions. Additionally, the development in urban areas has resulted in the establishment of high-quality educational institutions, facilitating better education for students. Consequently, this trend proves advantageous for individuals who choose to relocate.

On the contrary, a significant outcome is the impact on the agricultural sector. The turnover in farming diminishes as people prefer jobs over agricultural activities. For example, the migration of individuals from the countryside contributes to a reduction in the rural population, decreasing the number of farmers and affecting the overall outcome of this sector. Furthermore, housing and land prices reach their peak in towns, making it unaffordable for middle-class families to purchase their own homes.

In conclusion, this trend presents both benefits and drawbacks. While the advantages include improved educational opportunities for children and better job prospects, there are significant disadvantages such as increased land prices and a reduction in the productivity of the agricultural sector.
