Band 4+: In many countries, people are now living longer than ever before. Some people say an ageing population creates problems for governments. Other people think there are benefits if society has more elderly people.

It’s hard to deny that people are living longer at present and the population of elderly people has been larger than ever before.Such an fact leads impressional people to generate the opinion that elderly people will be very benefit for the development of society.However,such a statement suffers from both logical and factual fallacies.As far as economy,equality,science technology are concerned,I strongly hold that the rising of elderly people will creates many problems for society.

As far as economic influence is cosidered,elderly people have reduced the financial revenue of the society.Financial revenue is derived from work taxes.On the one hand,the elders had retired and don’t need to pay for the work taxes,on the other hand, society should spend a part of the revenue on the elderly people.To be more specific,the revenue should be used for paying old-age pension and social welfare fund.Futher more,elderly people don’t have the consuming ability as the young people.

Secondly, the fact that with the increase of retirement age indicates that elderly people,who are occupying too many jobs and making it very hard for many young people to find work，making society less equitable.Take the case of the state-owned enterprises have a problem of age imbalance ,which older people retire very late and younger people don’t have the opportunity to enter the workforce here.As a result,not only does it slow down business, but it also makes young people very disillusioned with society because of the unfairness of employment brought about by older people.Had it not been for the increase of elderly people,the society would never lose

so many jobs for young people.

Nevertheless,a voice arises that science technology need to be led by elder professors,because they have rich experience in the scientific research and knowledge accumulated over the years.Ironically,most scientific breakthroughs come from young or middle-aged people in these years.This is because people will lose innovation as they get older.The most important result of scientific research is to produce innovative breakthrough,and the most important ability of researchers is creativity.Therefore,elderly people do not add much valueto scientific research ,on the contary,they also reduce innovation.
