In today’s world, food wastage has become a growing concern, posing significant challenges to society, economy and environment. This problem is mainly caused by poor planning and excessive purchasing. However, several measures can be taken by individuals, societies and governments to reduce food waste.
To commence with, there are several reasons why people throw away food. First and foremost, many individuals buy more groceries than they actually need, often beacause of special offers and discounts. As a result, some products expire before they can be consumed or may get rotten due to poor storage habits. Apart from that, people frequently order excessive quantities of food at restaurants and are unable to finish their meals. For instance, when a person is not able to complete the meal served in the dish it is thrown away in garbage which leads to wastage as it cannot be reused in any circumstances.
However, several steps can be taken to address ths issue. At individual level, people should plan their meals and prepare shopping lists before visiting supermarket. For example, a person should buy only the products they require and should even prioritize using materials approaching their expiry date first. Furthermore, supermarkets should build up a practice of donating unsold food that is till safe to consume to charities and people in need. In addition, government can also organise public awareness campaings to educate citizens about the environmental and economic consequences of food waste.
In conclusion, food waste is largely the result of unnecessary purchases, excessive amounts and inadequate storage techniques. Careful shopping, proper restaurant practices and public awareness can significantly reduce the amount of food discarded everyday.
