Smoking has been prohibited in many parts of the world. I completely agree that this measure is valid because it protects non-smokers from harmful tobacco smoke and encourages smokers to reduce their tobacco consumption or quit it.
One primary reason for agreeing with this perspective is that the smoking in gathering spots causes harm to second-hand smokers. For example, employees in restaurants or bars may be exposed to smoke throughout the workday, the impact of which may lead to health problems such as headaches, difficulty breathing and in the worst cases, lung cancer. This is particularly dangerous for children, pregnant women and individuals with respiratory conditions. Non-smokers should have the right to use public spaces without being forced to put their health at risk because of another person’s habit.
Furthermore, smoking forbiddance could lead to decrease in the number of smokers, which, in turn may reduce the consumption of tobacco. If people cannot smoke in workplaces, shopping centres or caffès, that is in places they are used to, they’ll have to look for locations where smoking is permitted, which won’t be very convenient. So, over time people’s laziness will prevail and they will cut back on their nicotine intake.
To conclude, restrictions on public smoking is fully reasonable. It protects innocent people from the effects of chemicals released when cigarettes burn and when smokers exhale. In addition, such limitations may lessen the number of people who are dependent on nicotine. Overall, this policy helps create cleaner and safer places and contributes to better public health in the long term.
