Band 7+: In many countries, the amount of crime is increasing and some people believe capital punishment is the only solution. To what extent do you agree or disagree

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

There is an exponential escalation in criminal activities across the globe. In the wake of such predicament, some individuals fathom the death penalty to be the lone effective solution. My firm conviction is that the proposed solution oversimplifies a complex problem. I, therefore, disagree almost entirely with this approach.

The primary reason why I significantly disagree with the notion of judicial murder being the only solution to tackle the snowballing crime rates is due to its lack of effective universal applicability. Punishment for any misdemeanor must be suitable for the nature of the said misconduct. Proposing judicial execution as a one-size-fits-all solution for every wrongdoing is irrational and unjustifiable. For instance, granting death penalty as a result of possessing marijuana and other recreational drugs is unreasonable to an extortionate extent. Such approach to minor misconducts is extremely counterproductive as it will cause mistrust and unrest among the masses.

Moreover, such multifaceted matters can only be handled by tackling the root of the issue. Surveys suggest that many non-violent criminalities are committed out of sheer necessity. For example, a starving homeless person is tempted to steal food to relinquish his hunger. Under such circumstance, it will be sensible to consider the underlying problem of poverty instead of taking that person to an electric chair.

However, it might seem reasonable to some people to utilize legal execution. One possibility of legally enforcing such measure is that it might discourage some people from committing any crime altogether. Such initiative might lower delinquencies over time.

In conclusion, the appropriateness of utilizing capital punishment as means to solve increasing crime rates is contingent upon the nature of the wrongdoing. Such extreme penalty is suitable for heinous acts such as sexual assault and homicide. However, it is arbitrary for minor misconducts that can be chastised by implementing fines, mandatory welfare work or even jail time if necessary.
