The demographic shift of young people prioritising career success over settling down with a family is quite common in today’s context. Individuals between the ages of 24 and 35 are more career oriented than focused on starting a family. This essay will explore the potential problems this shift in mindset can cause and appropriate solutions to such issues.
In today’s inflation ridden world, starting a family is an expensive task. This rising cost of raising children discourages youngsters from starting a family. Another reason that prevents youngsters from starting a family is the hindrance which it may cause in their career succession. These decisions on a macro scale could lead to problems of extinction on cultures and demographics as the proportion of older generation increases in comparison to the younger counterparts. This will lead to economic slowdowns due to the loss of productive populations and reduced inflow of new talent.
To address this pressing issue, there is need of combined contribution from governments, organisations and individuals. Global governments should focus on curtailing inflation, and introducing family planning schemes targetting young people. Organisations and employers should introduce policies that ease the process of raising a child for working parents, with facilities like day cares in office campuses and flexible working hours for working mothers.
This psychological shift in youngsters on starting a family can only be countered by raising awareness, and providing concrete solutions to the issues faced by today’s generation thereby ensuring that family planning and career succession go hand in hand.
