In this modern era, respect towards older people has been declining day by day. This essay will discuss why is this happening and then describe the possible effects of the problem in society.

In my opinion, nowadays parents are not giving proper guidance to their children about respect. They just focus on their skills which helps them to get a better job in the future. Due to a lack of parental guidance about showing respect to aged people, children think that respect is not necessary for them. Additionally, the generation gap is the key factor for diminishing respect from children. In many cases, elderly people don’t show a response to the thought of youngsters. As a result, when they neglect the decisions of youths, they don’t show any esteem to older people.

The possible effects of this problem include moral degradation and the development of more selfish people in society. First of all, youth find it unnecessary to show proper esteem to elderly people, they will soon forget to respect other human beings. Moreover, they will fail to teach the next generation about mutual respect and family values. Finally, as a whole society would have selfish members who would not be able to maintain social relationships which ruined the image as well as cultural values of a society. For example, public transportation normally provides reserved seats for those seniors. If younger individuals do not pay attention to the right, they will take the seats carelessly.

To conclude, Elders have contributed to society throughout their lives and deserve to be treated with dignity and respect in their old age.
