Nowadays, it is commonly argued that obtaining a same-sex school has further side effects. However, some parents prefer to determine their child to this kind of discipline. Personally, I strongly disagree with this trend due to some negative setbacks.
Regarding single-gender schools which allow for example boys to grow on their own by enhancing skills and gaining confidence without being compared to girls, who often develop the same ones more quickly. According to some research, graduates of all-girls schools perform better academically, have higher aspirations and greater motivation. Therefore, with minimum distractions and building confidence, co-ed schools are more reliable. For instance, educating in the same-sex classroom eliminates competing and correlation with the other gender.
On the other hand, the lack of communication and interaction with mixed genders in early stages of a child’s life can lead to further misunderstandings. At some point, boys and girls will have to coexist with each other in real life without previous experience. Secondly, some girls may struggle with self-identity, comparing themselves with other girls who seem more popular. Moreover, single gender creates a deficit of diversity. Boys and girls in the same-sex classroom are unable to listen from other perspectives and gain broader understanding of each other. Along with this, gender – isolated education causes one to feel superior from the other sex and promotes gender disparity. Consequently, this attitude, in the long run, induces circumstances when they are working side by side.
In conclusion, while selecting the same-gender or co-ed education for offspring has several positive points such as rising self-esteem and better concentration on learning, some drawbacks eventually arise in the forecast interacting with all one another. And I totally approve of the fact that there has to be a chance for diversity and ability to deal with other genders.
