We live in a developing and contemporary society where gender segregation mitigates considerably, and both men and women have equal opportunities in every field of life. It has been believed that, in the 21st century, females no longer feel the need to get married due to women’s capability to earn their own income. Personally, I partly agree with this suggestion, based on some reasons that are explained in this essay.
On the one hand, there are plausible reasons to argue that the financial security of marriage is no longer essential for women. Centuries ago, when gender inequality was the most significant issue, females had restricted opportunities in most spheres, such as education and jobs; thus, they had to get married to economically depend on their husbands’ families and be compelled to serve them. However, nowadays, gender equality significantly influences society; women can easily encounter more opportunities to pursue higher education degrees and occupations. As a result, they can generate their own income rather than depending on others. Moreover, due to their ability to earn and manage their property, there is no compulsion on them to get married, which provides them with more freedom in terms of lifestyle and time, as they can do whatever they want.
On the other hand, finance is not the only issue affecting marriage; other societal factors in the modern world also drastically influence the choice to be connubial. For example, most women would start a family, raise children, and take responsibility for household chores, meaning their aspirations, such as careers, traveling, getting advanced education, and pursuing other goals, could be sacrificed. These obstacles could have a profound detrimental impact on women’s development, both intellectually and mentally, making various fields of life more challenging. Therefore, an increasing number of women are reluctant to get married and continuously focus on their achievements. That is why I assert that a combination of factors may have a more profound influence on delaying marriage than any single financial effect.
In conclusion, as discussed in the above paragraphs, I partially agree with the idea that solved financial issues can result in a freer life for women worldwide, but I believe that this is not the only reason and that it is just one aspect of the whole problem.
