In a fast-paced world, public figures are increasingly accepted as inspirational figures and exert a significant impact on the attitudes and behaviors of the younger generation. I hold the view that the disadvantages, including unrealistic beauty standards and the risk of imitating immoral values, outweigh the advantages.
In the first place, being influenced by the famous and trying to catch up with the latest trend in beauty expectations is one of the drawbacks. Nowadays, a number of celebrities prefer to be on cameras with a huge demand for makeup and some digital correction, which creates fake standards for individuals’ expectations. Thus, followers of this trend crave the beauty that their role model introduces. For example, a study published by the American Psychological Association found that 70 % of teens and young adults are trying to have the body and look that is presented by influencers. Moreover, unchecked idolization of public figures may lead individuals to adopt misguided or inappropriate values. For instance, some singers engage in drug usage and violence in songs, which are accepted by many teenagers worldwide. Even though some organizations take control over the expenditure of these songs, they become famous among teens.
Despite of disadvantages, role modeling sportsmen may have a better influence on youths. For example, football players like Cristiano Ronaldo are an outstanding example for those who come from an underprivileged family. His hard work to reach his dreams inspires adolescents to follow their dreams and dedicate themselves to society. Additionally, some celebrities focus on real-world problems and inspire their audience to become more socially and politically engaged. As an example, Greta Thunberg aims to raise awareness about climate change and take action on the problem. As a result, many people, including me, know more about environmental and political problems.
In conclusion, admiration of celebrities led teens to pursue unrealistic standards, potentially resulting in physical and mental exhaustion. While it may motivate teenagers to try more to be successful and aware of the world we live in.
