Advantage And Disadvantage

Band 6+: In most countries, fast food is becoming cheaper and more available. Do you think the advantages of this development outweigh the disadvantages?

The fast-food industry has witnessed significant global growth due to its affordability and widespread availability. While present a complex picture with both positive and negative implication, affecting an individual’s quality of life, health, and societal well-being, from my personal perspective, I would lean toward the belief that the drawbacks of this development outweigh the benefits, and an explanation will be given in the following essay.

On the positive side, the prevalent consumption of fastfoods offers several advantages for individuals facing time and financial constraints. In fact, the expansion of fast food stalls and restaurants is easily eacessable, providing a quick and substantial meal. This convenience is particularly beneficial for those with busy schedules, who can save time for other priorities, such as work or relaxation, instead of spending time in supermarkets, buying raw foods and preparing complete meals by themselves. Another point to consider is that prepared foods often have affordable prices, which are appropriate for low-income citizens, students, and individuals suffering financial challenges. The cost of a standard prepared meal is generally two or three times lower than that of organic and healthy alternatives.

However, the health consequences associated with excessive fast-food consumption cannot be ignored. Overconsumption of fast foods, which consist of high sugars, fats, carbohydrates, and preservatives, has detrimental effects on people’s health, leading to sedentary lifestyles, obesity, cardiovascular diseases, and a decline on worker’s productivity, ultimately affecting the whole nation’s economy. Additionally, the increasing number of patients facing these health issues also places strain on the healthcare systems. Furthermore, the mass-production of fast foods contributes to adverse environmental problems, including pollution from waste, contaminated water, and excessive packaging.

In conclusion, while the widespread use of fast food establishments offer great deal of merits for citizens in some aspects related to finances and time, I would lean toward the state that its demerits such as pollution, health problems go far beyond all the benefits they are bringing.
