Reading culture has experienced a notable transformation from traditional paperbacks to e-books, with more and more individuals changing their reading habits. In my opinion, the benefits of this trend outweigh the demerits. The following expository paragraphs will discuss the advantages and disadvantages of the aforementioned statement, along with my opinion in conclusion.
To begin, there are several compelling reasons for digital books’ being better than their counterparts. Firstly, e-books are easily accessible because they can be accessed through any digital device, making them easy to transport and carry. Additionally, electronic books are environmentally friendly because the input resources required are limited. For instance, a study conducted by the World Health Organization reveals that the introduction of e-books reduced the cutting of trees by 39%. Therefore, these digital reading platforms are better for nature and our ecosystem.
On the downside, the drawbacks that make this trend problematic are the effects on eyesight due to the fact that these books put a strain on vision, especially when reading is done for prolonged periods. For example, an article released by the Hindustan Times reported that online reading during the pandemic era caused 189 students to lose their eyesight because of excessive screen time. In addition, digital books lack the feeling of sensory experience that can only be achieved through turning the pages of paper books.
In conclusion, I firmly believe that the pros overshadow the cons of electronic books as they are more accessible and transportable. Furthermore, the contribution towards preserving trees plays an essential role in the betterment of the ecosystem, which is a huge plus point.
