With the rapid advancements in the field of technology, it has been increasingly common for people to study online. While there are clear advantages to this phenomenon, I believe that it also comes with several disadvantages.
Proponents of online education cite various reasons to support their stance. With its low cost and time-saving nature, many individuals prefer to pursue their education through online. For example, people do not have to purchase university needs such as books and notebooks. Instead, people can use their digital devices to note and read without considering even uniforms. Furthermore, people have a wide range of university options to apply through internet based on their interests usually at lower prices. In an era when people cannot pursue high education due to its high tuition fees, it makes a big difference. Moreover, online education is also an eco-friendly choice since people commute less and use fewer fossil fuels, reducing carbon footprint productions.
On the other hand, critics of online education argue that if students are involved in online education, it breaks interpersonal skills such as team work, collaboration and leadership. Gone are the days when people could secure a job with a single diploma, as today’s rising hiring standards have diminished these opportunities, since many employers want to hire employees with interpersonal skills. Additionally, excessive screen time is detrimental for our health because it limits our physical activities, causing eye strains, obesity, and sleep disorders. Finally, online education lacks practical aspects. People can get only information without implementing what they have learnt throughout the course.
In conclusion, while online education benefits due to its cost-effectiveness, time-saving aspects, diverse options, and eco-friendly nature, its negative impacts on the broken interpersonal skills, health and a lack of practical issue should not be forgotten.
