In many urban areas, property owners have the freedom to design and built homes and offices according to their personal preferences, with minimal government regulation. While this level of flexibility can promote creativity and individual expression, it also presents certain challenges. Hence, in my opinion, the disadvantages of this lack of control outweigh the advantages. Both merits and demerits are elaborated in the following paragraphs.
There are considerable drawbacks of this approach. Firstly, a lack of uniformity in design can lead to the development of unattractive cities, because without co-ordinated planning, buildings of vastly different styles, sizes and materials may be constructed side by side and this reduces the aesthetic appeal of the cities. Secondly, lack of design control affects tourism, as it losses visual appeal. Tourists are often fascinated towards cities that are cohesive and have beautiful architecture, but if buildings are designed haphazardly the city may appeal chaotic and unpleasant, which can reduce its appeal as a tourist destination. Paris, for instance, attracts visitors due to its consistent and historic styled building.
Nevertheless, one of the significant benefit of allowing owners full control over construction design is it gives opportunity for creative architectural innovation. When Strict regulations are not implied, people can experiment with different styles and this can add uniqueness to a city. Additionally, property owners can tailor buildings to meet specific needs, which can improve functionality and efficiency. For example, a tech company can design an office with open spaces and energy-efficient features that can be suited to their working culture.
To conclude, while allowing freedom to construct building as per one’s choices fosters creativity and ensures personalization, the lack of regulation can result in urban planning issues compromising aestheticism and safety. Therefore, I strongly assert that the disadvantages of minimal control over construction design for outstrip the benefits.
