Band 5+: In some countries an increasing number of people are suffering from health problems as a result of eating too much fast food. It si therefore necessary for the government to impose a higher tax on this kind of food.

It is true that an increasing number of food industries have some detrimental effect on people’s health who are suffering from various health issues. Hence, it is crucial for government to place higher tax on fast food. I completely disagree with the idea that introducing higher tax by government can enhance the situation.

There are a variety of reasons why placing a considerable amount of tax on fast food is not an appreciating idea to me. Firstly, a large number of people depend on their small business of fast food for their livelihood. Or, there are many people who are recruited on fast food industry. If government set high tax, the industry would be forced to diminish the labor, which would be daunting for country’s economy. As well as that, in some countries, one of the major export industry is fast food industry. They would earn a lot of foreign currency through export those items. The revenue from this industry would experience a dramatic fall if high tax is introduced. Another reason is that there are many countries who are rich in traditional items including Turkey, India, China, and so on. These are considered as a great tourist attraction. Every year, millions of tourists visit those country’s traditional restaurants to try their cultural fast food items. It is eventually benefited the economy of the country. If the government set the law of high tax, the country will see a great loss of tourists.

In addition, nowadays the young generation of a country are more interested to set their own business instead of finding a job. They may find convenient to start with a fast food restaurant. By placing more tax, they would lose their hope on entrepreneurship and give up the idea of constructing own industry. Furthermore, people think having fast food is a good way to enjoy their special day. They would discourage to visit restaurant and try their traditional fast food item by setting high tax.

In conclusion, considering all the factors discussed above, I believe that it is not a viable idea to impose a higher tax on fast food to flourish the situation of health problems occurs from consuming fast food.
