Band 6+: In some countries it is common for students as young as 15 to get a part time job while they go to school. However, some parents would rather their children focus entirely on their studies.

When looking for a jab in todays society, one of the requirements is always experience and knowledge and countries that allow students to have part time jobs starting from the age 15 while they go to school get mixed reactions from parents. While working part time and also going to school can have its advantages such as having work experience from a young age and opening many opportunities in the future, it can also cause damage to a students academic life and mature them too quickly.

A student starting to work from a young age in a country that allows students to work part time, while also pursuing their studies can have many advantages of its own. A student will have a larger social circle which will help them decide how they want to shape their future and their areas of interest. While working part time the students social circle will increase, and they will be able to observe other peoples lives outside of their family, friends, teachers and overall inner circle which will give them different ideas of how they will want to shape their future. For example if a high school student is working part time and one of their co-workers is in university, discussions about universities, their application process, the programs they offer these will all affect their view in this topic which will eventually lead them to decide on what they want to do in the future. While working part-time a student will also gain work experience. One of the requirements when applying to a job is a certain amount of experience in that area and overall knowledge, and working from a young age will help a student gain that experience and knowledge early on and will put them ahead of their peers due to this. For example, if a student worked at a shop of some kind, they will have an overall idea of how the system in a shop works, what everybody’s responsibilities and duties are. The experience that they gain will only benefit them in the future since experience is a big part of job applications.

However, if a student cannot balance their academic and personal life while having a part time job then it is up to debate whether it is the right thing for them to be working. A students academic life should come before everything, since that is their main responsibility which makes it their main priority. If a student is not able to balance their academic and work life, then one will fall short and affect them negatively. For example, while working part time it is possible for a student to have a hard time meeting deadlines, and if this is the case than their academic life will get damaged; and the same applies for a opposite situation where the student prioritizes their academic life to an extreme that they don’t show an expected performance in their part-time job which makes their work-life fall behind. In addition to this a student managing their personal life is also very important. Before the adult stage in life, a student should be able to live a free and happy personal life, that fits their liking. However it is already hard to balance academic and work life and balancing a personal life on top of the two can cause a student stress and have a general negative impact on their life. If a student is only going to school and work and now leaving any free time for themselves then this will be damaging for them and it will be one of the disadvantages caused by being allowed to have a part time job in such a young age.

In conclusion, there are many different views about wether it is appropriate for a student to start working from the age 15 while they too balance their academic, work and personal life. There could be many advantages to starting to work from such a young age such as, having work experience and a student going out of their comfort zone which creates many future opportunities for them however there could also be many disadvantages such as a students academic or work life falling behind one another or a student not having free time which would prevent them from having a personal life out of school and work; and would make them mature too quickly.
