Advantage And Disadvantage

Band 5+: In some countries, students have to learn two or more languages at school. Do the advantages of this outweigh the disadvantages?

Opinions are divided about the optimum number of learning foreign languages at school with some suggesting students should learn more than two languages when they study at school. Although students may come across some difficulties while learning several languages simultaneously at school, I believe that the advantages far outweigh negatives since students have no trouble with finance when they are younger and the curiosity for learning new things should be the top priority.

It would be unfair to demand school children to learn numerous languages at the same time. Studying many languages during the school time could be challenging for students to cope with them since school children probably have compulsory school curriculums to complete, this reduces the productivity and energy of children. This imbalance can be further compounded by doing their housework, because youngsters have to devote lion’s share of their time for house chores, in consequence, they can not devote any time for themselves to meet with friends and chat with them. So they do not feel any excitement about being young because of the excessive amount of homework from learning languages which may result in children’s behavior becoming more reticent. Moreover, children also need to take short breaks from study, but in this case, learning two or more languages does not give any time to take breaks to recover their energy, and this is not only physically difficult but this is also mentally demanding, because if children do not take time off from education, the brain neurons may strain and lose their ability. This unstoppable education might show severe outcomes later in life, such as psychological problems. In In Italy, for example, many local schools introduced few new languages to study for students without removing any other compulsory subjects, this method showed several problems related to the psychology of children after a few years.

Despite the drawbacks mentioned above, positives are more powerful than negatives. Learning more than two languages can provide a lot of benefits for school children. One of the foremost plus of studying new languages is money availability, since school children do not care much about financial matters, as schools are almost free all over the world, but there is no such an opportunity when they are grown up. Governments usually cover all expenses of children at school, because if children study well all subjects, they can be top level of specialists which can also boost the economy of countries. Moreover, school children have curiosity for learning new things and no one could stop their eagerness for knowledge, which also makes the process easier and does not make any trouble related to enforcement for studying, because pupils should do their homework in time. Learning languages is not only useful at school but it also creates future prospects, such as getting into multinational universities or even job opportunities not mention the usefulness for self-improvement, which results in boosting the country as well. In Uzbekistan, for example, the free education system added several languages into school curriculums to learn, which created big opportunities for school children and after many years, the economy of Uzbekistan increased dramatically year by year.

In conclusion, the advantages of learning foreign languages at school are superior to its drawbacks.
