People have always debated on whether young people should focus more on real hands on experience training, rather than the following the traditional path of university education. I strongly believe, that the disadvantages of work-based training outweigh the advantages.
Work-based training does come with several relevant advantages. For example, this kind of training for young people allows them to acquire real world experiences as well as practice in the specific field that they hope to work in. It allows them to deal with high stress situations and the opportunity to adress it head on. An example of this, would be learning how to work under someone else like a manager or boss as well as acquiring the necessary social skills to collaborate with fellow employees. Also, being able to carry out all the tasks and responsabilities that roles requires gives young people the necesary insight on whether this is the field they want to specialize in.
However, this type of training comes with significant disadvantages compared to the university path. Firstly, they would miss out on the extensive and thourough theoretical framework and information provided to students by professors, which greatly influences your level of knowledge and understanding of your field. From my own experience, studying Business Administration has allowed to me to obtain a complete overview on many areas of business such as marketing, finance, strategy and Human Resources development. To add on, the university experience also has positive social effects for students as it creates an entire artificial environment perfectly curated for young people to interact with each other and create meaningful and long lasting relationships. Focusing on myself, I have met some of my best friends during university lectures, which has greatly improved my overall mental health. Lastly, opting for the work based route strongly limits your future career path and your forced to almost immediately decide exactly what type of role or field you want to work in. Meanwhile, universities give you the necesary time and resources to attend and learn about all types of different areas and subjects, which allows students to have more time and take more informed decisions on their futures.
To sum up, even though going straight into a work based program does offer significant upsides for new adults, it still is grealty outmatched in terms of all the missed profesional and social opportunities that universities offer.
