Positive And Negative

Band 6+: In some parts of the world, it is becoming popular to research the history of one's own family. Why might people want to do this? Is it a positive or negative development?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

In the modern era, with the development of technology, everyone can easily discover an individual’s past and his family history. This has led to a trend that is becoming increasingly popular due to several factors. In my opinion, this situation negatively affects individuals.

To begin with, for national security purposes, it is important to investigate a person’s family history to prevent potential harm. For example, if a person wants to access a nation’s secrets, he must be investigated from his past to the present to determine whether he is a spy. As a result, the nation’s security can be enhanced to the maximum level and its secret information cannot be disclosed to outsiders. Moreover, in some cases, when a wealthy individual spends a lot of money to hire qualified butlers and maids, he needs to know about their past to prevent hiring potential criminals. Therefore, understanding one’s past can be a useful skill for wealthy people to mitigate potential dangers.

However, probing into one’s past can be considered an illegal action because it violates personal privacy. This action can make the person who is investigated feel unsafe and they may become anxious or angry when things go too far. Also, for those who want to hide their past, such as the less fortunate, it is unfair because they cannot choose where they were born or lived. When people discover their past, they may face discrimination from those around them.

In conclusion, thanks to modern devices, it is easy to discover one’s origins, but we should not use this ability for the wrong reasons.
