In contemporary society, there is an increasing tendency among companies to allow their employees to work as freelancers for most days of the week. I firmly believe that the disadvantages of this approach outweigh its advantages in terms of supervision and and team motivation.
On the one hand, the merit of allowing empoleyees to work in distance is convenience. To be more precise, many employees prefer working from home rather than going to the workplace every day, as they consider daily travel time-consuming due to significant amount of time spent on the road. In this case, they are likely to be more productive and manage their tasks more effectively. Moreover, the remote work allows employees to organise their schedules more flexibly, which not only does this opportunity enhance their performance, but it also reduces stress levels of workers.
On the other hand, there are some drawbacks related this process. One major drawback is that executives may lack effective supervision over employees, as some of them may tend to avoid performing senior-level task. Some employees need proper monitoring by their managers, as they may lack experience or have weak result-oriented skills. Consequently, project deadlines may be delayed, and the organisation’s overall operational efficiency could be under the risk. Another disadvantage of remote work is the decline in team motivation. To be more specific, employees who work in a physical workplace tend to be more socialable with their colleagues, which encourages collaboration, idea-sharing, and brainstorming, which ultimately enhances overall team efficiency.
In conclusion, although there are some advantages of working from home without coming physically, the drawbacks are far more considerable in terms of monitoring issues and colloboration.
