Nowadays, it is quite common for people to have multiple jobs and work more than the traditional eight-hour workday. This trend is rather new, and previous generations were not faced with the privilages or the challenges it created.
The initial reason for this trend’s emergence is the financial state and the needs of a person who has multiple occupations. Moreover, the ever-growing Inflation affects people and their need to earn more. Other than economical and social aspects, the emergence of this trend can be traced to personal reasons as well. For instance, people’s personal ambition, the need for financial stability, and saving accounts for emergencies are great motivators to work multiple jobs at the same time.
As with any complex matter, the decision to label the act of having multiple jobs as “good” or “bad” is not easily made. On the one hand, there are several advantages to be employed at two or three companies instead of one. Higher salaries and promotions are a couple of privilages that come with working three jobs. Furthermore, if someone devotes most of his time to work, he can gain the trust and respect of his employers and co-workers as well. So, social aspect is another factor for this trend.
On the other hand, being employed in multiple companies can become quite problematic and create disadvantages as well. As such, you may find yourself rather tired due to long working hours. Demotivation is another product of working two or three jobs at the same time. Lastly, mental fatigue, which can manifest as depression, is a direct result of working too much.
Personally, I believe that with the right tools, one can take advantage of working more, while minimizing the damages it may cause. These tools include awareness and balance. If you can create a perfect work-life balance, your chances of benefiting from multiple job opportunities will increase drastically. At the same time, the pressures can be minimized as well.
