In the past, photography was mainly used to capture real people and places. However, with advancements in technology, images can now be altered, making it difficult to trust what we see. I believe this is a negative development because it can contribute to increasing depression and reduce transparency in society.
One major impact of manipulated photography is its effect on mental health. Many people post unrealistic pictures of themselves in luxurious locations or with expensive items. When others see these images, they may feel pressured to achieve the same lifestyle, leading to self-doubt and dissatisfaction. As a result, this can contribute to depression. For example, psychologists in Iran have observed a rise in depression cases due to unrealistic portrayals of life on Instagram, where people often showcase a lifestyle that does not reflect reality.
Additionally, digital manipulation of images reduces transparency in society. If people frequently edit their pictures to appear more attractive or successful, it creates a culture of dishonesty. Over time, this can erode trust between individuals, as people may feel deceived by false representations. Furthermore, in professional and political contexts, edited images can mislead the public, making it difficult to distinguish between truth and fabrication.
In conclusion, while technology has advanced photography, it has also introduced significant drawbacks. The spread of unrealistic images can negatively impact mental health and reduce transparency in society which is detrimental and harmful. Therefore, I believe this is a harmful development that should be addressed by promoting authenticity in media and social platforms.
