Recent years have witnessed an exponential growth in innovation in numerous fields. However, there have been significant debates about whether innovation should be focused on profit or on addressing social and environmental issues. Personally, I believe that the balance between economic growth and the inhabitants’ quality of life should be maintained in order to ensure the long-term development of a nation.
On the one hand, proponents of profit-driven goals point to the motivational force for economic and social development. As a matter of fact, almost all companies have Research and Development Departments (R&D) that assists in investigating purchasing trends, allowing corporations to design new products and services that match demand and increase sales. Additionally, as the demand for products grows, so do job possibilities, which enrich the community and raise living standards. To take another salient example of the health sector, with advanced techniques and well-trained practitioners, it costs less time and money for people to take care of their health. Taking everything into consideration, innovation driven by economic growth could not only raise profitability but also improve the populace’s quality of life.
Proponents of prioritizing solutions for social and environmental issues claim that people cannot live better lives if these problems keep affecting generations of people without the advent of effective solutions. To clarify, many communities have long struggled with starvation, gender inequality, and economic insecurity, and there is no assurance that these problems will be resolved. Instead of giving pensions and funding, education should be highlighted as the practical solution. In Japan, for example, during the post-World War II period of crisis, education innovation transformed this nation from ruins to riches. If awareness of the whole society is drawn to a certain level, the economy will be changed in a positive way in the long run.
In my perspective, innovation could bring both benefits to economic growth and society; however, if one of the advantages is not sufficiently enhanced, innovation could not be a comprehensive solution. In other words, the balance of economy and society of a nation could consolidate its position in the world.
To recapitulate, with the fast-growing speed of the economy, innovation plays a crucial role in developing the economy and ensuring quality of life. Innovation should be explored to pursue profits while also addressing social and environmental issues to strengthen the country’s global standing. In the foreseeable future, I hope that innovation can be applied in the right circumstances, making this world a better place to live.
