Band 7+: It is a good idea for people to continue working in their old age, if it is possible for them to do so. Do you agree or disagree?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

Some people think that it is a good idea for old people who are still able to work to continue doing their jobs. In my opinion, I completely agree with this notion, as it can improve their physical well-being and help them deal with feelings of loneliness when they get older.

There are various reasons why old individuals should maintain their working life if they are able. One clear reason is that it enhances their physical health. When old generations persist with their occupations regardless of their age, they maintain their physical health through engaging in physical work-related activities everyday. Take a 60-year-old tour guide as an example, he has to travel around for a long distance nearly the entire day with visitors. Therefore, he is less likely to encounter joint issues compared to a person with the same age who spends the majority of a day indoors.

Moreover, going out to work helps old people tackle their feelings of loneliness. As their children reach adulthood and move out to lead independent lives, colleagues and other relationships in the workplace become ideal sources of support for older employees to share their thoughts and emotions. As a result, encouraging elderly people who are still able to work can help them feel a sense of community and alleviate loneliness. For example, a regulation in Japan which allows retired people to return to work if it is possible for them has a large number of positive feedback from this group as being involved in their professions with their former mates makes them feel enjoyable and reduces their feelings of loneliness.

To sum up, I concur with the idea that elderly people who still have working ability should continue their jobs as not only it could improve their physical health but also ease their loneliness feelings.

It is often argued that urban green spaces, particularly in densely populated cities, should be replaced with residential buildings to address the growing demand for housing. This view is partly justified, as rapid population growth and increasing urbanisation have intensified housing shortages.
