In an era where information is easily accessible through books, the internet, and films, some people believe that traveling to discover other cultures is no longer necessary. While these resources can certainly help deepen our understanding, I strongly believe that we cannot fully appreciate the true beauty of the world without experiencing it firsthand, rather than just through photos or online information.
Admittedly, the media plays a significant role in educating us about the traditions of different countries. Online resources, such as virtual tours and documentaries, provide detailed insights into history, customs, and lifestyles. For instance, if someone wants to learn about Jiu-Jitsu, the Brazilian submission sport, they can find more information than even some Brazilian citizens might know, including its origins, its founder, and the reason behind its name. Moreover, learning from media allows more people to explore cultures without facing the financial or logistical challenges that come with travel. For many families, traveling is simply not feasible, so they can learn about their dream destinations through the internet and films.
However, relying solely on these resources has its drawbacks. Observing customs and traditions in their natural context can have a much greater impact than merely reading about them. Take football clubs like Barcelona, Real Madrid, and Liverpool, for example. Experiencing their culture in person provides a deeper understanding of the clubs’ histories and passions. Furthermore, information is sometimes distorted by journalists and publishers to attract audiences and make content more engaging. Similarly, on TV programs or social media, Africa is often portrayed as a continent plagued by poverty and famine. Yet, when you travel to Africa, you can experience its stunning natural beauty—such as safari parks and picturesque hills—as well as its vibrant culture. You may even discover that some African countries, like Algeria, Egypt, and Morocco, are more innovative than certain European nations.
In conclusion, while books, films, and the internet offer valuable insights into different cultures, they cannot replace the enriching experience of traveling. Traveling expands our worldview and creates lasting memories that cannot be replicated through any other medium
