Travelling to other countries is not necessary to study the cultures of other people. Reading books, watching films, and searching on the internet are already sufficient ways to learn about other people’s cultures. However, in my opinion, it is not enough.
While books, films, and the internet can provide some insight into other people’s lives and cultures, it may not be adequate. Among these options, watching films can be the most engaging and entertaining, sparking curiosity and increasing your interest in learning about other cultures. Yet, delving deeper through internet research may overwhelm you with an abundance of information that can be more confusing than helpful. Moreover, not everything found online is accurate or trustworthy. Similarly, although books can offer more reliable information than some internet articles, their content may be limited or outdated, making them insufficient references.
I believe that to truly understand another culture, you must experience it firsthand. Therefore, immersing yourself in the places you wish to learn more about is the best approach. By engaging in their culture, you can not only learn but also comprehend the reasons behind their practices and traditions. For instance, in the Philippines, where Christmas celebrations start as early as September, experiencing this tradition firsthand is crucial to fully grasp its significance.
In conclusion, merely relying on books, films, and internet searches to learn about other cultures may not satisfy some people’s desire for cultural knowledge unless supplemented by personal experiences. To me, firsthand experience is essential for a deeper understanding of other countries’ cultures.
