People hold widely different views on how technology influences the way we communicate. In this essay, I will discuss both views before explaining my own opinion.
On the one hand, accessing technology allows people to keep in touch with others remotely. Thanks to the invention of mobile phones and social media, users nowadays have various ways to maintain their relationships. For instance, social platforms like Instagram, Facebook, and Zalo provide in-app chatboxes where people contact each other through their online accounts by sending messages or making video calls. This may be beneficial to long-distance relationships, as family members who are forced to be separated by work or study can frequently update their lives, which will maintain emotional bonds regardless of physical distance. Additionally, it is undeniable that introverted people are present in society; therefore, social platforms appear as a tool for them to establish friendships with other online users without face-to-face interaction, making them feel stressed and anxious.
On the other hand, opposition proponents often emphasize the consequences of online relationships. Social media creates superficial relationships with no emotional depth, arguably due to the absence of physical interaction, tone of voice, and facial expressions. In long periods, users gradually have a sense of disconnection, despite having hundreds of online friends. Furthermore, online entertainment is a primary driver behind the dwindling amount of time family members spend together. For example, many teenagers today are immersed in video games and YouTube content, which makes family meals valueless, and general conversations between family members are fewer and fewer.
In conclusion, although technology may isolate people from real relationships, I firmly believe the benefits outweigh the disadvantages, as it makes people communicate better.
