It is believed that populations should only consume domestic food and import should be as little as possible. While I acknowledge the logic behind this suggestion, I still firmly disagree with it for several reasons.
Proponents of this view may have several arguments, two of which are economic development and no foreign control. They may well argue that when countries can become self- chain autonomy, it leads to the increase in national demands. And once demands go up, productivity will need to boost, therefore, job opportunities will come to many citizens, which contributes to financial growth. Another possible argument is that nations are not under foreign control when they don’t import. When civilians only eat domestic food, the government can also control and ensure the almost fixed prices, leading to out of foreign control.Nonetheless, these advantages are only positive in the perfect world in case there’s no severe weather hindering agriculture and food crisis.
Additionally, the food crisis and unstable society are among the main reasons arising from this recommendation. Regarding the former, if food suppliers depend completely on domestic agriculture, what would be like if hazardous weather comes up? It would disrupt the food supply chain, leading to a food crisis.Next, concerning the latter, when countries face a food crisis, prices will go up unexpectedly. If countries steadily import a certain amount of food, there would not be a big problem. Unless, sellers can take advantage of the crisis to highly increase the prices, which is highly likely to be an unstable society due to the shortage of food.
In conclusion, it is understandable why some may argue that the population should only eat domestic food and there should be a maximum restriction of importing, including economic development and foreign dependence reduction. However, I cannot support such a view because of the aforementioned reasons like food crisis and unstable society.
