Band 7+: It is the responsibility of schools to teach children good behavior in addition to providing formal education. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

The argument is made that schools should be held responsible for teaching good behavior in addition to providing traditional academic education. I largely agree with this viewpoint, as schools provide an effective setting for children to develop their behavior and improve their interpersonal skills, although parents also have a crucial role to play in the moral development of their children.

One primary justification for my stance is that schools have the potential to train students to become better individuals in society. Educational institutions often promote positive behavior by emphasizing values like honesty, respect, kindness, and responsibility. By imparting these values through lessons, schools can help students cultivate empathy and understanding towards others. For example, when moral lessons about politeness and respect are taught, students can recognize the importance of these behavioral codes and strive to exhibit them in real life, thus becoming well-behaved individuals.

Another compelling reason is that schools can enable students to enhance their social skills. By attending schools, which are representative of society, students can learn how to handle conflicts, resolve differences, and communicate effectively. These skills are essential for their personal and professional lives in the future. For instance, students who may initially misunderstand each other can find ways to collaborate on team assignments, learning how to appreciate their differences and value opposing viewpoints. Consequently, their communication skills may gradually improve.

However, the responsibility of teaching good behavior cannot rest solely on schools, as parents also play a crucial role in shaping a child’s conduct. Specifically, parents can become positive role models for their children by displaying decent behavior themselves. For instance, they should speak politely, listen attentively, and refrain from using abusive language or derogatory terms in order to set a good example.

In conclusion, I maintain that schools should promote positive behavior in students while providing formal education, taking advantage of their conducive environment and ability to enhance social skills. However, the role of parents in this regard is also significant. It is advisable for parents and schools to work together in promoting positive values and instilling good manners in children.
