Nowadays, crime has increased at a surprising rate. There is disputation among people. While some people say longer sentences decrease the crime rate, others say they don’t help lessen. On my point of view, longer sentences both have pros and cons owing to the criminal behavior depend individually.
On the one hand, the criminal who commit crime should be punished by their behavior. It is a consequence they have to admit by their action for example, abusing, stealing and invading privacy. In the prison, the criminal will lost their freedom or chances to do things they want because they will be watched by the guard. Without harsh punishment, the criminal won’t regret their doings and they will continue committing crime again in the future.
However, some people don’t think the crime rate can be reduced by longer sentences. Some criminals don’t learn their lesson when they are imprison. They continue committing crime again because they are not afraid of the consequences though the punishment is harsh. To deal with this issue, the most important thing is understanding the cause of the crime. The government should find out why the did what they did and come out with a plan. The major problems that lead to committing crime are education and drug so government should provide better education and strict law.
To sum up, the dispute between people whether the longer sentences can reduce crime or not can be seen with different perspectives. In my opinion, the longer sentences is necessary but also the cause of the crime.
