The growing disparity between the wealthy and the underprivileged has led to ongoing debates over whether narrowing the income gap is essential for a more harmonious and content society. From my perspective, I agree that this does contribute to promoting a more stable society and improving the overall quality of life. However, it is also true that there are more viable solutions to reach communal happiness.
Admittedly, reducing the income gap between different classes can ensure a more equal society and lessen the resentment among individuals. Provided that income is fairly distributed, citizens would feel a stronger sense of unity and justice. For example, regularly rated as the happiest country in the world, Finland also has one of the lowest income inequality levels, largely due to its robust social safety net and progressive taxation system. Furthermore, a narrow income gap could also lead to a healthier community. As individuals do not have to compete against others or deal with chronic stress to ensure their financial security, they can focus more on personal growth thereby improving their overall mental health.
However, having said that, income equality alone does not guarantee a more content society. Indeed, history tells us that competitiveness is human primitive nature which contributed to the development of the current society. In this case, if governments do not curb the economic divide properly, a future with significant financial declination will occur. Moreover, instead of focusing on financial-related issues, authorities should offer their citizens a stable social welfare system. For example, topics such as political stability, human freedom or education should be taken into account in order to create a more prosperous society.
In conclusion, I believe that limiting the disparity in financial status is a powerful factor to creating a harmonious society. Nevertheless, this should be a part of a more comprehensive campaign aiming for enhancing societal well-being.
