Band 8+: It was predicted that people living in the twenty-first century would have more free time than ever before because of improvements in technology. To what extent has this prediction come true?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

In the modern technological era, technological developments have changed the way people work and live. It was once predicted that these improvements would give people more free time than ever before. I believe that this prediction has come true only partly because, although technology saves time in many daily activities, it has also made people busier and more connected to work.

On the one hand, technology has reduced the amount of time needed to complete many everyday tasks. Modern machines such as washing machines, robot vacuum cleaners, and online banking services allow people to finish household chores and personal tasks much faster than in the past. As a result, people have more time to relax, spend time with their families, or enjoy hobbies. For example, instead of visiting a bank or shopping in person, many people can complete these activities online within a few minutes.

However, technology has also created new pressures that reduce people’s free time. Smartphones, laptops, and the internet make it possible for employees to work from almost anywhere. Many workers continue answering emails or attending online meetings after normal working hours. In addition, social media and streaming platforms encourage people to spend many hours on their devices, leaving less time for rest or outdoor activities. Therefore, although technology saves time, it also increases the amount of time people spend connected to work and digital entertainment.

In conclusion, I believe that the prediction has come true only to a limited extent. While technology has made daily tasks more efficient and created some extra free time, it has also increased work demands and digital distractions, meaning that many people are not as free as expected.
