Band 8+: Libraries should focus on improving their technological resources rather than in building a large collection of paper books. To what extent do you agree?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

Libraries serve as repositories and disseminators of knowledge through the provision of printed materials such as books and magazines. There is ongoing discourse regarding whether these institutions should prioritize the augmentation of their technological resources or the expansion of their physical collections. I am of the opinion that, in light of the current global context, focusing on technological advancement is a more effective strategy for enhancing the overall quality of libraries. In the subsequent analysis, I will delineate the rationales for this stance and provide comprehensive exemplifications.

From one perspective, the integration of technological capabilities enables a larger number of users to concurrently access the same reading materials. Furthermore, electronic books, unlike their printed counterparts, can be distributed to an unlimited number of individuals, resulting in heightened customer satisfaction. Additionally, individuals from disparate geographical locations can access literary works without physical constraints. For instance, the novel “Note Book” by a British author was read by 55% of the Asian population through online e-libraries. Furthermore, technological advancement facilitates an increased variety of literary resources, thereby enriching the library experience for users.

Conversely, the challenges posed by urbanization necessitate efficient space utilization. Electronic devices can accommodate an inexhaustible number of e-books, unlike physical library spaces, which have finite storage capacities. Additionally, electronic storage minimizes the risk of damage or loss, unlike traditional physical repositories. For example, at my workplace, document storage posed a significant challenge, but we successfully mitigated this issue by safeguarding electronic copies, affording convenient access as needed.

In conclusion, the modernization of libraries through technological means offers increased accessibility and expansive storage capacities, surpassing the advantages of traditional physical collections. In my view, given that the primary function of a library is to maximize the dissemination of reading materials, prioritizing technological advancement ensures improved service delivery for users.
