Some people think that life skills such as cooking or financial management should be compulsory subjects in the high school curriculum. In my opinion, although these skills are very important for future life, they should still be optional subjects.
The first and biggest reason is that school subjects already take up a lot of time, adding another subject will put more pressure on students’ time, when the curriculum is getting heavier. Moreover, nowadays social subjects or science subjects also include a bit of social issues and life skills such as calculating interest rates.
Secondly, to add a new subject, we need to train human resources for it, specifically teachers. In addition, whether the facilities can meet the requirements will be a big question mark.
Finally, the needs of each student are different. Students who choose to study social subjects will learn many life skills during their studies, and students in natural subjects need to cultivate their technical knowledge, rather than skills such as cooking.
In conclusion, adding life skills subjects is good for the future. However, we need to consider the conditions of each locality and each student to come up with a reasonable solution. Making life skills subjects optional will be a reasonable solution for students and schools.
