Band 6+: Living in a country where you have to speak a foreign language can cause serious social problems, as well as practical problems. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

It is, indeed, widely acknowledged that verbal language is the best method communication method. While some argue that knowing the native language of the country where he is living is not pivotal for social and professional interactions, I strongly believe that speaking and understanding the language of the country where you are living is mandatory, otherwise it might result in unwanted social and professional displeasure.

If someone lack the language fluency of the place of living, he will experience hard times in getting familiar with culture, popular hobbies, music, and so on. Furthermore, he will not be able to make friends. As a result, he might feel isolated and this isolation will lead to incomprehension of culture. For instance, Habb – my friend – moved to Russia few years ago. He couldn’t understand Russian and that’s why he didn’t understand their culture. However, he was invited to a alcohol party, as he wasn’t used to it, he engaged in a quarrel.

Not being able to speak native languages also leads to practical problems. Firstly, it is required to have a good command of language to perform sales, marketing, management, engineering-related jobs. Additionally, one cannot even order food without knowing the language. Furthermore, the person without proper proficiency of the language is not able to communicate during medical emergency.

In conclusion, it is crucial for an individual to know the language where he lives. Otherwise, he is bound to not understanding their culture, not able to make friends as well as he won’t be able to perform jobs or communicate in medical emergency.
