Over the past few years, the issue of whether zoos should exist or not have been widely debated. Although opponents of zoos argue that it’s immoral to store animals in captivity, I believe that zoos stand an essential role of protecting animals as I will discuss in the following essay.
One of the reason why zoos are important is because they offer protection for animals, especially those in danger that may becoming extinct. For example, zoos could engage in breeding programmes so that the endangered species can later be released back to the wild. Another advantages of zoos is education, zoos allow people to learn more about different creatures from around the world. For instance, by observing animals in real life, people may be more likely to appreciate the value of life and to be more concerned about environment.
However, people who disagree with zoos contend that it’s cruel to keep animals in limited space because of doing this deprive their freedom and rights to roam freely. On the other hand, some zoos made animals perform for commercial purpose, which result in psychological stress among them and may further arise some ethical concerns.
In conclusion, although zoos have many benefits such as conserve endangered species and arouse public awareness toward nature, but it is clear that the welfare of animals is also very important. Therefore, provided people have better ethical concerns and zoos make some changes to their methods of operation, the conditions of animals will be improved.
