In the 21st century, fashion trends are imperative for the majority of people when purchasing clothes. Mercurial and often controversial, fashion has become a considerable influencer of people’s lives. The biggest fashion companies on the market regularly conduct shows and set up new trending styles of clothing and other fashion items, and hundreds of millions of people all over the globe follow these trends. Opinions diverge on whether the reliance on global trends is beneficial or detrimental to modern society. In my point of view, following standardised dressing styles does not enable a person to identify his own fashion style.
Global fashion has been developing and impacting more people progressively by implementing new styles and materials in clothing. This was caused by an increase in people’s awareness of their appearance and a want to express themselves through the way they dress. The first fashion companies started setting trends, and nowadays global fashion standards affect individuals’ clothing preferences anywhere in the world.
While some people allege that fashion trends are an improvement to society, helping to find your style and express yourself, I believe fashion standards do the exact opposite: confine a person’s dressing preferences within these standards. An individual does not evince his identical tastes in clothing to not face social disapproval and buys the clothes which are conforming to what is trending at the moment. This is why fashion trends are not a positive development for modern society.
Taking everything into account, fashion trends are a crucial part of people’s ways of self-expression. However, I believe that fashion trends should not be followed blindly by people to not restrict themselves in the way they dress.
