It is true that considerable amount of sugary food and drink are produced by food industries, leading to serious health problems. While I think individuals should also be aware of these ingredient’s disadvantages, I completely agree with the idea that it can be helpful to decrease the rate of consuming sugary food by increasing their price.
To begin with, obviously, the most important reason for high levels of sugar consumption is its accessibility and its cost. All people, whether poor or rich, consider sugar not only as an available material, but also affordable. As a result, people can use it in their daily routines without any limitations. Moreover, in this process person’s taste will be merged with sweet things; therefore, it will be really hard for them to avoid eating sweet products even if they encounter related diseases. So, it could be quite beneficial if the government raised the prices in order to prevent different groups of people over-consume it.
Furthermore, based on physiological researches, it is a commonly held idea that humans would learn more from restrictive rules rather than encouraging ones. Because of this, if the price of sugary products increases, the probability of using less of them will go up, too. For example, in my family chocolate was very popular, and both young and old people loved it, but as soon as my father retired and his salary dropped significantly, we
didn’t afford to buy it anymore. So, my mother replaced it with some healthy and cheap products like fruit and vegetable. However, if we could purchase chocolate, we certainly did it without paying attention to its damage.
In conclusion, due to the reasons I mentioned above, I strongly agree with the opinion that sugary food and drink should be made more expensive.
