Most of museums charge an entrance fee, while other do not. This essay will argue that the drawbacks of charging for admission do not outweigh the benefits. Although not everyone can visit the museums because of the admission charge, I believe that the funds help many museums to keep the maintenance of the building and exhibitions.
The main disadvantage of charging a high entry fee to a museum is that some of the population can be exclude. Many families in less developed countries have money just for basic expenses such as food and rent which lead to be impossible to pay for museum entrance. For example, in Latin American countries most of the admission fee for exhibitions overcomes the minimum income. However, I would argue that without this income museum cannot cover the operation costs to keep the doors open.
One of the advantage of entry fees is that it is allow many museums to keep the maintenance of the building and the exhibitions. Some museums receive support from the government while others receive only just a small amount or none which is insufficient to cover all the expenses. Ticket sales help to keep running the museums exhibitions and allow some people to visit them. For example, in the last few years in European countries such as Italy and Spain the government has been cutting fundings to the museum which leads that they have to rely on entrance fees to stay open. I think the most important consideration is the continuation of the museums, despite the cost.
In conclusion, although it may be unfortunate that not everyone has access to see the exhibitions in a museum if there is a charge for admission. I believe the money earn from the admission can cover most of the expenses to keep the doors open making a fee more beneficial.
